Hi, I’m Dr. Eliza Sampey (also known as Liz)!

Dive deeper into my story & mission

My journey is rooted in a lifelong passion for the outdoors and a commitment to peak performance through sustainable body-mind wellness. For over a decade I thrived as a professional endurance athlete, specializing in backcountry multisport expeditions and self-supported bikepack racing. During this time I also built a parallel career in physical therapy, with a focus on the rehabilitation and performance of outdoor athletes.

After 7 years of focus on racing in nearly every discipline of both road and off-road cycling, I became inspired to combine my background in climbing/mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and backpacking with my love of cycling, and transitioned from racing into expedition bikepacking.

My career and adventures took me across the globe, where I had the privilege of combining my physical therapy expertise with my love for exploration. Combining expedition-style bikepacking, packrafting, skiing, and mountain running with volunteering my physical therapy skills in places like Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Pakistan, I brought my passion for healing through movement to those in need, always with the goal of trying to give as well as receive during my international travels.

I started competing in self-supported multi-day bikepacking races in 2018, and fell deeply in love with the process of combining expedition-style backcountry travel with optimizing every aspect of self with the goal of going fast. Often riding into the sunset, through the night, and greeting the sunrise from the seat of my bike, I competed in 16 bikepacking races between 300 and 800 miles long and set a couple of women’s records along the way. I had found my sweet spot in combining adventure with racing, and felt like I was only getting started.

But life had other plans for me. My journey in adventure sports took a sharp turn after I sustained one too many concussions, the most significant of which occurred in 2020. This injury led to persistent symptoms, and in early 2024, I made the difficult decision to step back from my career as a professional athlete.

Recognizing that my experience as both a physical therapist and an athlete uniquely positioned me to help others facing similar challenges, I sought out specialized training in concussion rehabilitation and management. Over several months, I immersed myself in cutting-edge research and was taught and mentored by leading experts in the field. This intensive training not only deepened my understanding of traumatic brain injury but also transformed the way I approach rehabilitation.

Inspired by this knowledge and my own experiences, I developed my Concussion Rehabilitation & Mentorship Program. This program reflects nearly 20 years of expertise in physical therapy, my personal journey as an athlete, and the latest advancements in concussion care. It’s designed to support those navigating the complexities of recovery, offering a personalized, holistic approach to healing.

In addition to my work with concussions, my longstanding offerings in Virtual Rehabilitation and Adventure Performance Coaching continue to evolve. Since 2013, I’ve been practicing virtual physical therapy using a coaching model that prioritizes body-mind wellness in addition to injury rehabilitation, and high-level consistency and accountability over conventional insurance-based care. This approach, combined with my personal experience in multiple adventure sports, enables me to empower outdoor enthusiasts to expand their limits, achieve their goals, and explore both the wild places of the world and the depths within themselves.

Now that you know a bit about my story, I hope you’ll consider allowing me to be a part of your journey. Whether you’re seeking rehabilitation, performance coaching, concussion care, or guidance as you prepare for your own adventure, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
